I wanted people to remember my name and have fun, so what better way than giving them a small puzzle. If everyone is far away, nothing happens and they can watch my reel. But if they step closer, they slowly reveal part of my name with particles. And with teamwork, they can reveal my whole name. This achieves multiple things. First, it's a great way to snap people from an observing state to an active, fun state. Second, it's a great way to attract more people to my space. And finally, it's a great ice breaker to talk about my motion and installation work. How I did it? By smashing two processing libraries (openKinect and openCV) along with some custom particle coding, I was able to make certain depths become particle emitters. Using Processing, I was able to capture packets of information streaming through the network in real-time and project it as a dispersion of particles on strings. If a student were to visit a website, for example, Processing will visualize the activity as a torrent of particles. If there's no activity, however, the particles will remain in suspension. I used strings as a surface to represent the connections of a network and how the information comes in and out of existence. The rectangular ratio also mimics the schools architecture in the background.
